In recent days, the Mainz Hauptbahnhof has made the national news...in a very negative way.
You see, we are in the midst of summer vacation. Somehow, the Deutsche Bahn management folks who manage the railways and such....have stepped into a major mess.
Through various acts.....and leave schedules....they allowed the local train station controller team to be at a marginal level. The union? Well, they woke up and realized the impact. A guy calling in sick here, and another guy there....suddenly, you've reached the point where there isn't enough of a controller team to manage the highly technical train system.
So Mainz basically shut down operations. What the Bahn folks will say in public is that things will correct themselves by the end of August....as the regular folks come back off leave. The sick guys? Well, no one in a position of authority will challenge them or their doctors.
Meanwhile, the public is a bit hostile over what was a guaranteed public operation. The union? They probably scored some points over their moment of glory. But there will likely be a very tough scheduling effort for July and August of 2014. You can sense that this will never be allowed to happen again.
