Graffiti Deaths

In the last couple of hours in Berlin....two graffiti artists (young guys)....were killed by a train which they weren't expecting. Berlin regional news reports that the cops say it was a 18 and 19 year old pair.....apparently spraying up graffiti near the Wilhelmsruh S-Bahn station.....along the train line S1.

Back in 1978 when I first arrived in Germany, you just didn't see graffiti much around Frankfurt or any other regional town that I visited.  When I returned in 1984....you could start to see graffiti around the railway tracks in Frankfurt.  Today?  Across every single major urban area of Germany....literally hundreds of millions of graffiti pieces sprayed out.

Public sentiment over graffiti?  Fairly negative.  On rare occasions, especially near the station in Mainz-Kastel, you can find some great pieces of art work (five-star graffiti).  But that's the exception....the rest?  Undesired by the public and starting to make frustration a daily thing.

The necessity of putting one's life at risk on some railway lines to accomplish graffiti?  These two guys will be talked about for a while by some.  Some Germans will just shake their heads because they don't see a reason to force one's art onto people and lessen the landscape.
