5 Jan 2025: Eight German News Stories

 1.  Any truth to a power-shortage in SW Germany?

Well...there was a warning given late Thursday from the grid authorities, and it basically said for those in Baden-Wurttemberg....from early AM to noon on Friday....don't run the washer/dryer (appliances) or charge your E-car.

Cause?  Both Bavaria and Baden-Wurttemberg got 'screwed' in some fashion as they shut down the nuke/coal plants....so a fair amount of their energy comes from northern coastal region (those wind-generators).  The amount needed Friday?  More than what the power-lines could handle.

Blame?  Well....it goes to both the CDU and SPD.....with the Green planning.

This will just add more chatter to bringing back nuke-power.

2.  BR (the public TV sub-unit in Bavaria)....ran a documentary called “How Corona is shaping our society.”

The emphasis (I should note this was around 2 weeks ago)....a fair amount of mandates and authority-overreach occurred.....pissing-off folks, and in some ways....radicalizing them (left or right).  If you follow the documentary piece....some folks are peeved still today.

Good part to this?  Well...BR  isn't exactly a big magnet....so it's a pretty limited audience who watched the piece.

If you asked me....yeah, if you start a Covid conversation with a German....about 80-percent of the time, it goes 'south' (negative).

3.  Red-alert this AM in central Germany....ice and snow.  Flights cancelled  out of Frankfurt.

4. Interior Minister has said over Syrians in Germany....."Anyone who is well integrated, works, has learned German and has found a new home here should be allowed to stay in Germany."

The rest who don't fill the four requirements?  It appears that they will be on a list to send 'home'.

If you asked me over the percentage staying?  Those who've been here more than five years and under the age of forty....I'd guess near 90-percent would like to stay.  It's more likely to be a 50-50 mix after that point....on returning to Syria.

Total Syrians in Germany?  Gov't says around 1-million.

The biggest deal out of this situation?  There's supposedly around 5,000 Syrian doctors/nurses working in Germany, and I suspect the German gov't would prefer all of them happily-staying.

5.  INSA survey on voting?   Today....newest poll came out:

CDU still at 31-percent (unchanged).  SPD down 1-point (16-percent).

Greens improved 1-point  (13-percent).

BSW at 7-percent.  AfD at 20-percent.  Linke Party at 3-percent.  FDP at 4-percent.

Remember....if you don't get five-percent minimum....you fail to get seats.

Zero doubt that Merz will be Chancellor in the election....chief question is...what makes up the coalition?

6.  There's a US report out there over Credit Suisse (Swiss bank) that 'money' from WW II....came into Nazi-opened accounts there at the bank, and kept secret.  Interesting suggestion but no one is admitting anything.

Fact that most everyone connected back to the era is dead?  Well....the money continued on with relatives.

7.  Unusual accident from yesterday.....a fish transporter truck skidded on the A1 autobahn in Lower Saxony.  Topples over....causing  thousands of live trout to land on the motorway.  Total  loss for the fish.....seven folks wounded in the accident.

8.  I ended up watching a German game-show last night....with B-grade promis.  So in the last half....one of the matches was a spelling contest between two promi folks.  Ten words given, ample time for think over the word and type it into the computer.

Disaster....the two correctly spelled two out of ten words, and they lingered on because of the draw....with extra words to get a winner.

In terms of entertainment value?  Near zero.  It probably proves the value of spell-check.
