The Carola Bridge was built in 1971 (completed) in Dresden (old DDR days). It was to replace a older bridge from 1945 (war damage).
Things were fine with the Carola....up until 3 AM...back on 11 September 2024....where it collapsed.
So it kinda came out that back on 2019....the city tried to get the bridge on a replacement schedule (it was in marginal condition). The city went to the state, and asked them to cover the bulk of the cost. The state said 'no'....this was a project that the city needed to plan and cover out of the normal budget that the state hands down.
This week, the whole story came out, and the city admits in some way....they just kept putting off the replacement business....because of lack of funds.
This infrastructure problem gets brought up a good bit in Germany, with near a thousand bridges in some state of requiring replacement or repair. Frankly, the local, state and national budget process....isn't capable of handling the issue.
What makes this bridge problem unique? Well.....the river divides the city, and they had seven bridges for traffic, and with this one 'out'.....it's triggering serious traffic flow the remaining bridges.
