8 Dec 2023: Seven German News Stories

 1.  Some talk within EU....new regulation being formed....to get a driver's license renewed, you'd have to go and visit a doctor (no matter what your age is).  Still in draft form.

I don't think German doctors will be that hyped-up or interested in this idea.  It'll create a trust problem where a serious doctor who won't sign the paperwork...will lose his customer base.

Most of this idea is to create a 'can't-cross-the-barrier' situation for the over-70 crowd.  But with this type of doctor rule....you might have one or two folks (out of a hundred) in the 18-to-65 age group....because of drug-use/alcohol abuse....who won't be re-approved for their license.

2.  Bahn folks talking about more extensive strikes for the railway system in 2024?  Yeah.  It sounds like two and three day strikes might occur.

One odd aspect...as these strikes come more often....the Green Party agenda to dismantle in-country flights probably will never get public support because of lesser trust in the railway system to function.

Another odd aspect....one of the key reasons for the strike...Bahn workers want a 35-hour work week (down from the 38-hour situation currently on the books).  Bahn management has said absolutely 'no'.

3.  Presently, mid-December, we are up to 300,000 asylum applications in Germany.  Roughly 80-percent of the group....are male.  Added to the statistics....some are individuals who were deported out of EU member states....meaning it's merely a paperwork drill and almost zero chance of the Germans approving their asylum request.

When you analyze this paperwork drill and find applicants who don't fit into the system....this is the chief cause of public anger with the politicians and hype for the AfD Party.  Deporting out of Germany is a difficult task, and can take years.

4. ARD (public TV, Channel One) went and did a national poll....asking if Germans are happy with the work of the coalition government (running things).  Only 17-percent said yes.  Even among SPD and Green Party voters....it's still a majority (over 50-percent) who are disgruntled about the performance.

On talking about the Chancellor himself (Scholz, SPD)....only around 20-percent of poll takers were satisfied on his performance.

5.  New state of Saxony poll (state election in 2024).  Looks pretty dismal for the SPD Party (7-percent in this poll).  You have to pull 5-percent or more in the election of the state....to get seats in the state assembly.

Currently....three parties are assured of that kind of number....CDU, AfD (far-right folks) and the new Wagenknecht party.  CDU and AfD appear to have around 33-percent EACH....so that takes up the bulk of votes.

6.  Lot of black ice on the streets/roads of Hessen this AM.

7. Telephone sick leave now permanently on the books?  Yes, up to five days.  You call the doctor....talk over the issue, and he can issue a digital sick slip.  To be abused?  I expect this idea to evolve into something less than five days.
