I tend to point this out....that you can walk around any major German metropolitan area, day or night, and feel reasonably safe....with the exception of Frankfurt's train station after 9PM (way too many druggies and nuts).
This week, the Hamburg cops put a major part of their town on an 'extremely cop-friendly' map. This means.....a fair number of cops are walking around, and if they come up to ask for a ID or body search....you will comply, period. It's friendly word from the cops and in a professional way, until you get disturbed and aggravated. The cops then have the right to haul you off to jail and let you simmer there. (note: the map is compliments of the local Hamburg cops and for public consumption).
All of this....comes from episodes over the past two weeks with radicals taking to the streets and causing disturbances throughout the city of Hamburg.
From comments in the local papers of Hamburg, one gets the impression that the residents were friendly about one protest or one weekend. Once this slipped over into multiple occasions, they kinda vented to the city council and cops. Reaction from the radicals? Centered mostly on what they perceive as political-building issues.
One almost gets the impression that a Stuttgart-21-type atmosphere is in the mix, and folks think they can whip up support for the radicals and negativity against the cops to invent a political mess out of nothing.
My advice....if you were planning a trip around Hamburg for the next couple of weeks? Eyeball the map, and try to avoid any travel after sundown in those areas. As silly as it sounds.....I think folks are expecting more trouble.
