The Disinterest Factor

In the last month, via public TV and print media in Germany, there's been a lot of hype over DDR (old East Germany), the Wall coming down, and the history attached to DDR.

Well, here's the thing (to which no one really argues about)....the bulk of German society (working-class folks)....really don't care.  Yes, they aren't really into the documentary pieces, the news forums, the discussion groups, or the hype.

It probably does sell to some degree with those over fifty years old (who were 20 when the Wall came down).  But virtually everyone under the age of 30 has either minimum or limited interest in the topic area.  Maybe if you are a college graduate.....it might be a higher percentage.  But the general crowd simply doesn't care.

This has been brought up now in the last day or two.....the 'disinterest' factor.

I'll even go and offer this observation, that in another twenty years.....it'll be real hard to find anyone who wants to sit down and watch a 90-minute piece over DDR history (1945 to 1989).

It would be curious if the numbers hold in eastern German cities, and that those younger generation folks there don't care either.

But I think the bigger question is this.....in another hundred years, will this period of roughly four decades even be mentioned by historians....other than noting the Wall was built, and then the Wall collapsed?
