It is a page three story in the German news at present. Probably twenty different news sites reporting this now.
What the authorities are saying is that there is a 'spike' noted in terms of radioactivity, which started around the 29nd of September, roughly a week ago.
Threat to health? No....just that it's noticed and no one can say where precisely it came from. The drift? They say eastern Europe.
It's been picked up in France, Germany, Austria, Italy and Switzerland.
Source or type? Ruthenium-106. It's not the type used in nuke plants, which is the odd part of this story. You'd typically find this being used within satellites and medical treatment.
My humble guess? Someone had a collection of medical devices and 'dumped' them at some garbage dump without saying much....in eastern Europe. Maybe they came from western Europe and just figured no one would ask questions. The EU getting involved? You would think that they'd have an interest.
