About a half hour's drive NW of Frankfurt is the town of Oberursel. Some people would call it simply a suburb of Frankfurt, because of the urban growth of Frankfurt over the past twenty years. Others would say it has a unique character.
Over the weekend, a couple of guys (apparently with masks on) entered a bar/cafe in the town, and robbed everyone in the establishment, with a machine gun (in full view).
The take? Cops say near 8000 Euro ($10k).
Criminal raids like this being the norm? No. That's the curious part of the story. There criminal gangs or 'clans' at work in Germany, and they tend to focus on jewelry shop heists....where they go in with a sledge-hammer and snatch up maybe 200,000 Euro of jewelry. Walking into a bar as a 'band' and robbing everyone in the bar? It just never happens in German society.....not as a group situation.
My guess is that the criminal 'clan' folks have reached the point where they believe it's fairly easy to conduct a raid like this, and pick up 5,000 to 10,000 Euro for half-an-hour of work. The machine gun element to this? Everyone wants you to know how difficult it is for a German to get a gun license, but the other side of this is that criminals have no issues in getting weapons on the black market.
It'll be curious to see if raids start to become the norm, and how this hypes up Germans just to another level entirely.
