My German wife edged me into a conversation this morning....over heat-pumps. She'd spent two hours watching podcasts and reading up on them.
So, for our German residence.....full house with two apartments rented out...to get the right type of heat-pump (of the three types)....by the time you yank out the natural gas furnace and make all the modifications (roof and insulation already previously done)....it'd be in the 60,000 Euro range (would provide heating and cooling).
But here's the deal....to reach a lesser electrical consumption level.....you'd need solar panels on the roof, and hopefully get 75-percent of your power off them. So, add another 15,000 to 20,000 for solar panels/batteries.
Finally, she said...what idiot would go and get so far tangled up into such a debt situation like this....at age 55 or more?
Yeah, more or less....if this is the path ahead in Germany (mandated)....she's probably geared to leave within a decade. It won't be the US....probably some place like a Greek isle.
I would imagine probably a majority of German folks within 20 years of retirement are viewing this heat-pump mess, and shaking their head because they won't sign up to a massive debt issue.
