So this meeting of Chancellor Merkel, and the Bavarian Premier-President Markus Soder yesterday....a big deal? Yes. ARD (public TV, Channel One) did a good report worth reading.
Talks went back and forth, and in some ways....Merkel is laying down the card that she supports Soder, as he heads toward the CDU Party meeting where they will pick the candidate for the 2021 election.
The competition? Mostly just Merz. To describe the two candidates? Soder is mostly a common sense guy...leaning a little bit more to the right than Merkel did for the past dozen years. He hasn't been a drama queen, and when interviewed....you can't cite any crazy ideas.
Merz? He's more of a pro-business type and probably more conservative than Soder. In the summer of 2019, Merz held the cards, and probably had more public interest. Since the Covid-19 crisis....Soder has had more face time via the news media.
On the Merkel 'dislike-meter'? Merz is probably a solid '10'. There's no doubt that Soder is slightly disliked and Merkel had other people on her dream-list to follow in her footsteps. But reality has stepped in, and the Corona crisis period has changed the path to the election in the fall of 2021.
