Several German news sites have picked up on this story, and it's a curious historical piece with criticism likely to be dragged out for weeks. N-TV gives the better of descriptions.
So, this starts in 1965 (Chancellor Ludwig Erhard era).
German BND (CIA-like organization in Germany) money was used to support a military coup in Indonesia in 1965. What can be said is that anti-communist leaders came into power, and what played out over the months....was a significant number of executions (hundreds of thousands).
The amount of funding? Paperwork found indicates around 1.2-million D-Marks (roughly $600k).
Why all of this came up now? Buried for almost fifty-plus years? Files which were classified and in archives.....came up for review, and attracted some attention.
The pain now? Well....someone (probably Chancellor Merkel and President Steinmeier) probably has to do some apology tour, and then someone is going to find a legal method to sue the Germans for damages.
The end? This might beg for more doors to be opened and more BND adventures found from the 1970s....just my humble feeling.
