This is a long complicated story and I'll to break down to 3-minute read.
When ISIS and civil war started up in 2013.....some Syrians made the decision to head to Europe. Most settled on Germany....some on France, the Netherlands, Sweden.....and then around 40k to 50k decided upon Denmark.
What the Danes generally offered from day one....was a temp-visa. It was a polite way to say that you could visit and feel safe for a while.....then when things simmered back to normal....you would need to be evaluated again.
So in recent months....the Danes went to the new evaluation, and most Syrians are being given paperwork for leaving (hoping that some money with the exit-paperwork will be enough).
What's behind all of this? Generally.....three things:
1. Syrian young males are 15-times more likely to commit a violent crime (note, I didn't say crime....I said violent crime....meaning physical violence was used). It's not a good statistic to go discuss in a open forum. Syrian females? Generally, if you bring this up....no one can remember any type of crime in Denmark involving female Syrians.
2. Syrian unemployment in Denmark (at least in 2019)....was around 43-percent, which is a fairly negative number and begs for a long and frustrating conversation.
3. At least in 2017.....just over 17k Syrians in the country were getting public money (welfare).
I've spent around six weeks of my life in Denmark....mostly on vacations. It's one of those weird places where you generally feel 'at-home'. Things are generally quiet. You can walk through almost any city or town or village....feeling absolutely no threat. I should note....this was all prior to 2014 (before they began taking in migrants and refugees).
Danes are pre-disposed to expect things to run along a script. They aren't that accepting of things coming along to change the perception of the 'system'. I'd also offer the opinion that all of this 'system-business' requires a massive amount of taxation and revenue collected by the government.
I sat in 2008 looking at a bottle of Jack Daniels at some Danish grocery.....noting the pricing was almost double what it'd be in Germany (which I felt was expensive in itself).
From a refugee standpoint.....I doubt if I would have lasted more than twelve months before the cost of living would have driven me to leave.
From my viewpoint, a good percentage of the 'guests' probably did everything possible to show good intent and behavior, and the sad thing is that a fair number of young men lost themselves in this free and open environment....between drugs and alcohol.
So the visa-program turned and became an exit-program instead.
My guess on those with exit papers? They might go and try to enter into Germany....but if you view the EU program....once you've gotten an exit-form as a refugee....the rules are written so that you don't run to a second or third country to get a new 'deal'.
That's plain blunt story. I think if you'd rounded everyone into a room on day one and just said....you get one shot and if a number of young men in your group destroy that opportunity....you don't get a second chance...maybe it would have prevented this mess now.
