CDU Talks Over German Draft

Seven years ago, the Germans finally gave up on the draft system, and went to the US version....a volunteer military.

I noticed via Focus (the German news magazine), a short piece concerning the CDU Party discussing the idea of dumping the system, and going back to the draft.  Reason?  Well....the economy of Germany is so successful....that it's hard to attract German youth over to the military.

The old version of the draft (up until 2011) was built on the idea that you had two choices as a guy.  You went into the military for a mandatory six month period, or you did service for the same period with some charity/public service unit.  Your pay in this period?  Roughly 10-Euro a day.

Entwicklungshelfer was another option under the public service deal.....where you went internationally to do public assistance (for 2 years).

Even if the CDU were correct?  I think if you tried to bring back the draft....the political bickering would prevent this from ever occurring, with virtually all political parties except the AfD opposing this idea.

If the trend holds and fewer individuals can be recruited?  Well....you just end up with a smaller German Army.
