The German public TV network.....ARD....ran a short piece today, and updated folks on a new Danish law that went into effect.....which bans the Nikab and burkas from being worn in public.
The law basically says that a fine will occur on the first offense, and be around 134 Euro. If you repeat the episode? Oh, well....it goes up....eventually to ten times the 134 Euro.
The ban is worded in a funny way....to prevent public face masking. Also on the list? Fake beards, big hats and scarves which might hinder recognition of your face.
The odds of resistance? I would generally expect this to be challenged a good bit over the next couple of months.
The fake beard thing? Well....it's OK to have a real beard, but against the law to have a fake one. A fake moustache? They didn't say much against that one. Maybe they had a problem with too many women wearing fake beards and this is the only remedy to solve that. (just kidding)
The hats? That one is not clear either.
I kinda expect this to get challenged in court, and tossed out within a year. But there's not a lot of Danes voicing negativity about the law.
