Every single day now....the chief topic of the German news....is the drought.
ARD (public TV, Channel One) had a piece today which chatted over the impact on trees. The forestry folks speak up on the problem for millions of newly planted trees. Basically, with the heat and drought....a large segment will be dead in the coming weeks.
In their words....a whole generation of trees are dying off. The Germans plant roughly 500 million young trees each year in Germany.
The continued forecast? Well....the weather guys now say nothing much will occur in August, and it'll got to mid-September before you see any rain impact. By that point? Well....there's talk that the Danube River might be fairly dry (I read last week that you might reach a stage where you could walk across the river). River traffic? I'd expect most rivers to be shut down by mid-August for the major freighters.
