For a couple of days, it's been hyped-up by various sports news groups.....a new soccer super league coming to exist.
The deal? Across Europe, a league of soccer clubs would be created (using clubs that exist today) and would involve a minimum of eleven clubs....possibly on up to sixteen clubs. From the German league? Bayern is the club mentioned as an absolute member, and Dortmund gets mentions (if it goes to the sixteen number).
Criticism? A lot. Apparently no one from the German league knows much about this. The TV contract? Unknown. The amount of control on player trades between the two leagues? Unknown.
Here's the thing, which soccer fans will readily note over the past decade....there are certain soccer clubs in Europe which spend a fantastic amount of money and they typically make it into the top three winners each year. These are clubs with a fan base, significant capital coming in each year, and sell a great deal in fan memorabilia. This super league would make sense. The odd factor here? If you placed last in this super league for two years in a row, it would be a major problem for a winner-team to explain this and stay competitive.
Detracting from the present county-by-county league system? There's a lot of chatter about this and some fans think it's a big negative.
