It came up this week in a German news summary covering Germans who ride trains to work now....that the amount of time on the train (going and returning) is fairly substantial, with upward climb of Germans who are spending 90 minutes or more each day on the train. What are the long-distance travelers doing? Well....they bring their laptops and work on office projects there.
A growing number of the trains offer up Wi-Fi, and most seats have a tray to rest the laptop on. It simply makes sense to do something productive with the time.
Are bosses giving some office time as part of the deal....allowing the guy to come in 30 minutes later than normal? Some bosses probably have a deal somewhere in the mix.
Last year, the German Federal Employment Office came out with this one interesting statistic.....four out of ten Germans work in a district (a county) outside of where they live. There are some suggestions going on to say that stress is increasing because of this travel business....getting to work each day.
But there are various examples of people trying to make use of that travel time. Movie-down-streaming is going on, and folks relax in this 90 minute period. Some folks are working on projects for the office. Some are chatting with their insurance guy, or car mechanic about problems that exist. Some are talking with the spouse over shopping or vacation ideas. To say that stress is existing? No, I'd say that people are finding bits of time that they didn't have before.....while riding the train. It's the same way with newer cars with technology built in, and you have phone chats while driving along.
