Next to Merkel, the second most recognized person in Germany is the German national soccer team coach....Joachim Lowe.
In the past 48 hours, he's given notice....after 15-odd years....he's retiring.
Presently, it's probably generating at least 20-percent of the social media discussions in Germany, and consuming a fair amount of the sports news.
The bigger discussion? Well....the replacement guy.
If you ask most all soccer fans....they have one single name....Jurgen Klopp. He's been the coach for the Liverpool team. Right now....on name and facial recognition, I'd say that he's in the top ten Germans most known in the country.
If you go around Mainz, he's considered after the Pope....to be most 'respected' guy on Earth...because of the years that he coached there and the success of the team.
His odds? Well....there is this second name that's been thrown around...Lothar Mathaus. He's mostly known for being a big name star from the early 1980s to the 2000 era. Coaching-wise? He's generally only coached non-German teams (yeah, it's a bit odd). He hasn't really done much for the past three years except TV sports commentary.
The fact that he's been five times married? Well...some folks have said that he's difficult to get along with.
For some odd reason, he seems to have points with the upper level of the German soccer world, and Klopp doesn't.
How this will play out? Unknown, but for the next two months....a whole lot of hype will occur, and this might actually be a bigger discussion topic than Covid-19 in Germany.
