Back on 24 November, they had the national Presidential election in Romania. Remember....they have a multi-party system.
14 candidates.....around 9.24-million votes in the end.
No one had 50-percent or more. So the way that the rules are written....top two candidates move to a second election which was to be this weekend.
One candidate had 2.12-million and the 2nd place winner had 1.77-million. Things were fine on the 25th with these two.
But this week....the national Supreme Court of Romania stepped in and said a total 're-do' has to occur.
Chief reason? The 2.12-million guy is far-right-wing. And to be honest....he represented himself....he was not a party-affiliated person. There's no rule requiring an affiliation.
Folks are a bit hyped-up over the action....were not expecting a total disqualification of the election from late November.
Russian-influence a part of the story? That's what the court says.
I sat and did a long read over topics for the election. So the top five topics? Well.....Ukraine-Russia war, the economy (jobs), crime/corruption perception, LGBTQ rights, and oddly enough....not enough Christianity in the public sector (some folks think it needs more emphasis, and this became politicized).
How they intend to prevent Russian influence? No idea.
From a brief view of Romanian social media....someone made the comment....there could be six additional elections in 2025, with the right-wing guy getting the majority of votes in each one....with the court throwing out each result. Their gut reaction? You lose respect for the court in the end.
It's an odd problem
Footnote added: A fair amount of this right-wing voting trend....comes from use of campaign ads from Tik Tok. So the youth vote and trend to that direction...made a difference.
Yes, this whole election scares the crap out of France/Germany.....facing national votes shortly, and how Tik Tok might influence youth votes in each country.
