Germany and Covid-19: 17 Jan 2021

 1.  There's a piece in the morning's Focus news, which chats up about giving Germans who've been vaccinated....some type of advantage.

The deal?  You'd show your shot record, and get entry into theaters and restaurants.  The non-vaccinated people....no entry.

Trouble with this idea?  At this point, no one can project theaters open for at least six more months, and I might suggest restaurants opening won't occur until Easter.  Getting the bulk of the nation (say 60-plus million vaccinated) done?  That could be July/August timeframe.

I might add this note as well....no one can say that if theaters opened now....that you'd see any sizeable number of customers actually buy tickets.  The fear has reached a level where it might be several years before people feel safe sitting in a theater for two hours.

If we never get past 60-million vaccinated?  You'd create an entire category of people who aren't going to have 'status' enough to buy a movie-ticket, or sit in a regular restaurant.  Twenty-million potential 'losers'?

I'm mostly shaking my head over the suggestion...you'd just end up with a bunch of people carrying counterfeit shot-records.  Will the Merkel coalition go this route?  Unknown.

2.  80,000 Germans accomplished their vaccination on Saturday (yesterday), and the total for the country is just over one-million now.

3.  Moderna vaccine started up yesterday as an option (2nd brand in use in Germany)

4.  The Deutsche Bahn folks (the railway operation) have picked up the topic of the FFP-2 mask.  They are figuring how the mask would be mandated, and the path with customers.

General idea?  Just for the operations staff....40,000 per day, they'd need 80k masks on hand.  If customers were mandated (across the whole nation), they'd need 6.6-million masks to be 'sold' to customers daily.  The idea is that  they'd procure the masks and resell them.

The kind of logistical effort to make this work seven days a week?  I would question this being completely discussed.  Just stepping into a normal ICE train (the high-speed type)....it's a 10-percent chance that you arrive at the bathroom onboard....to find halfway through the trip that the toilet paper is completely out.  Another example is showing up in the 'pub-car' to find that their stock of beer is completely out.  To suggest that they'd have the FFP-2 masks on-hand for a mandatory situation?  I wouldn't count on it.

Final note here: cost figured by Bahn?  1.59 Euro per mask.  In general....you can find the masks as low as 1.20 Euro, so I'm wondering who handles the financial planning for the Bahn.

5.  Hardly a single day passes now in Germany, where a illegal party or illegal group have been discovered by the police.  I noted one such party broke up in Hamburg in the last day or two....at a Shisha Bar.  Eleven people in the 'bust'....two were juveniles.

Just how many illegal parties are going on now?  No one is guessing on this....it might be into the tens of thousands across Germany.  Some are in the back-rooms of pubs/bars....some are in forest huts....some are in the basements of private homes.
