Saving Mankind Story

I sat and watched a science piece last night....short update on a Icelandic project.

So the hype here....this Swiss company (Climeworks) has a machine which captures carbon in the air, and then sends it off to a underground storage plant.  The words of the guy describing this (at the scene)....it goes deep into the Icelandic ground.

The idea is you'd haul 4k tons of carbon.....into the ground, and save the Earth....each year.

The guys were awful proud of the fact that the whole plant ran off renewable energy....a key part of the design.

You look at this process (basically mixing water in some way with the carbon) then hauling down into some 'contained' rock region....assuming that it was permanently and everlastingly staying there.

Then I kinda remembered a particular element of Iceland....they have around 140-odd volcanoes on the island, and have earthquakes on a fairly regular basis.

The odds that this contained rock area with the carbon....stays contained?  Well....all you need is for one fissure to occur and the carbon leaks....thus dumping it back into the air.

I do admire people for wanting to save the Earth and mankind....but on the risk-situation....I'd say it's pretty good odds on some crack occurring and all this bad-evil carbon gets leaked back out.
