Mental Case Story

At some point yesterday (Saturday), on the SW part of Berlin, an attack occurred in the Wilsmerdorf neighborhood (a 2k by 3k meter area, mostly known for nice parks).

It's been reported via N-TV and RBB (public TV from Berlin).

From what the police say....this local guy (immigrant from Afghanistan, probably been there for five years)....got into some mental state of mind over a German gal who was landscaping in a public area (just appears that she was a hired gardener).  Immigrant guy reaches some level of frustration, pulls out a knife and stabs the older woman (late-50s) in the neck five times.

Now...no one says the confrontation that occurred between the two, or if the German gal even understood the Afghan's side of this issue.  I would imagine....like a typical German....she was probably anticipating some question on gardening and this confrontation about a woman working probably got her a bit peeved.  She might have responded back to the guy in a blunt way (Germans can be absolutely blunt), and set him off (triggering him).

Older guy (mid-60s) walking by....sees this attack going on, and comes to rescue the gal, but is also attacked.

Both the older two are injured, but surviving at this point.

Police?  They arrive shortly after this, took the attacker down, and detained him.

Motive?  Well....it's a Islamist view on women who should not be working in public, but the police generally say the guy (late 20s) is under a issue of mental illness.

What'll happen?  My guess....either today or Monday.....a local judge will confirm the guy for a 30-day period of mental evaluation....which will probably get stretched easily into two to three months.  This will probably all lead to a spring 2022 court episode where the Afghan guy is permanently sent off to a mental facility and controlled to a great extent for the remainder of his life. The five or six serious charges?  Probably wrapped up and the judge says the guy can't control himself, and earns a lifetime control situation in a German mental unit.

There's probably been around twenty events like this since 2015 that I can recall....where the police easily ID the terror-attacker as mentally deficient.  But you can't really do much until the guy has accomplished some act, and a judge gets dragged in to require a mental evaluation.  Without the evaluation and judge's consent....there's just not much you can say or do.
