Success of 'Funk'

Back around seven years ago, the governing board for public TV in Germany gave ARD (management head of all public TV/radio) 'orders'.  There was a serious decline in youth viewers for public TV (15-29 age group), and it was believed that this group would demand sooner or later....the TV-media tax to be ended.

There had been a previous attempt to create a network out of thin air, and run programs that were suited to this age group.....that was a complete failure.

What the youth generally wanted?  Well...science fiction and fantasy stuff.....like you had on US/UK networks.

ARD's budget for this idea?  Roughly 45-million Euro (between ARD and ZDF).  Yeah, it wasn't really enough to even build one single show.

So ARD decided to go a unique way.....this would not be a normal network, and it'd be only available by streaming video.  Right along this time period....podcasts were being noted.

In the past couple of months, the streaming service....'Funk' is the name.....has been rated a success story....and cost is not a big dynamic.

How?  Well....if you go and view the offerings here....there's a wide array of podcast folks....doing comedy, interviews, political chatter, chess/board games strategy, etc.

In some ways, the 45-million budget helped to jump-start the podcast business in Germany, and Funk was simply an outlet.

One of the few times that public TV in Germany got a formula right?  I'd generally suggest that, and they avoided spending tons of money with no pay-back.
