As the 8 PM news ended last night....the Chancellor (Scholz) came on and gave a two-page speech....mostly to reassure the nation of the 'plan' on handling the war. You can find the content of the speech here (Focus-provided).
What you should take away from this? I would suggest four things:
1. Toward the end, he made a blunt statement...."Putin will not win the war."
It is hard now to find anyone on the political side or in journalism....that suggests a win-win type moment coming for Russia at the end. Once all that nuclear-war chatter started up....the achievements of the past thirty years went into the 'toilet'.
2. He is rather blunt in saying that the Ukraine will not accept a Russian-written end-treaty...in so preparing Germans for what might be a fairly long conflict (going past the summer).
3. There is intent on his part....to ensure NATO does nothing to attach itself to the war and be participants. On this....once they hand over tanks and more artillery....he's probably missed that point by a 'mile'.
4. Finally, Scholz is known for his mayor years in Hamburg....as being a 'stand-and-view' manager. Yes, very much like Merkel.
I would suggest in the past four weeks....his typical management style has 'crapped-out' on public view, and last night's speech was more about showing authority over the situation and reassuring the public.
The speech ran on ARD, and one of the commercial networks. If you asked me over how many Germans flipped over to watch it? I'm not that sure that even a quarter of the nation sat and viewed it.
