Where Russia Stands (With or Without Putin)

I sat and watched a piece from state-run TV in Moscow.....pro-military agenda.  So last night, they brought on one of their former officers, and he chatted over what should NOT be done at this point.

He basically said....don't mobilize anymore or drag more reserves into the Ukraine episode.  It wasn't worth the effort.

Then he said a curious thing....Russia is operating with outdated hardware, and can't compete against NATO.

Then he said this crazy thing.....if your intention is to rebuild the Russian military, it won't be cheap or quickly accomplished.

I sat for a while, pondering this.

The Oligarch folks took a whole lot of funding for the Russian military to build mansions and yachts.  What cash they did get for the past decade?  I would imagine one-third of it was thrown away.

Trying to match the US or Europe's technology level?  How?  You'd be looking at five to ten years of effort to catch up on design.  But then to produce the hardware?

I think you'd be looking at fifteen-plus years to equal Europe, and then the problem is.....what GDP would use for that.....if oil and natural gas aren't moving, and you don't sell much of anything to anybody?

Yeah, they pretty much screwed themselves into a mess, with no way to win, and no way to threaten anyone....for the next twenty-odd years.

The guy who comes after Putin?  I hate to suggest it, but they need some Russian Elon Musk-guy to emerge and challenge the country to a whole new vision and broad landscape.  With past history?  Well....yeah, they tend to pick people who aren't that bright but accept corruption as the chief gimmick.

Just my humble thoughts.
