Traveling German Rail and Reservations

I often essay on German rail travel, and the varying aspects of the complicated system.  Today's topic revolves around the idea of making reservations.

Typically, I advise people NOT to make reservations (one-way cost in 2019 is 4.50 Euro for the reservation fee).  For about 95-percent of what you'd do in railway travel, it's simply not worth the 4.50 Euro fee.

However, if you are taking off during a holiday rush period...going from say...Frankfurt to Munich, onboard a ICE train (the highspeed railway), then you will find most seats full and you might end up standing up for half the trip.  In an episode like that, pay the 4.50 Euro for the reserved seat.

Regional trains?  Total waste to mess with reservations.  Most of these trips are 90 minutes or less.  I would suggest that if it's a rush-hour period, or during the holiday travel period....simply get to the station thirty minutes prior to the train, and be prepared to 'rush' in and grab a seat.  Waiting till the last minute and climbing to find every seat full isn't that smart.
