Bottrop Update

After the weekend event where a German drove his vehicle into a crowd of non-Germans (immigrants, refugees, asylum seekers, etc)....there's been a good bit of chatter by the local authorities over charges, and hyping his xenophobia as the chief trigger of the event.

But quietly some of the news sources hinted that he'd had mental issues (hospital time), but declined to really say what the issues were or ever connecting the intent to harm to a mental condition.

Well....this morning.....at least three news media sites are quietly telling the rest of the story.  Yes, the guy was under mental treatment about a decade ago for schizophrenia.  In fact, they kinda hint that he'd been under some doctor's care for 'decades' (the word used).  And for some period of 2005, he was actually in a full-up psychiatric hospital.

His welfare status?  Yes, that got brought up today....he's on Hartz IV.  Journalists are avoiding filling in the rest of the 'blanks', but you get the impression that his schizophrenia has prevented him from any fulfillment in life.

The potential for serious assault or attempted murder charges?  All of that chatter by the prosecutor folks basically goes down the drain.  You can present a case to lock the guy up permanently, but that's about as far as some German judge is going to allow you.  The rest of these hyped-up charges won't go anywhere.  No German judge is going to produce a guilty attempted-murder situation over a schizophrenia-individual.

I always caution folks when stories like this come up and you tend to react in the first twenty-four hours....you ought to wait three days and let the smoke clear.
