TV Commentary

Last night, via German TV offerings....there was mostly crap on.  So the wife and I went to the media-tech library....meaning we could watch public TV offerings from their streaming service.

First we finished up 'The Swarm' (ZDF's mini-series, 8 episodes, 40 minutes each).

Since I have not read the 20-year old book....I'm left with just the series to judge things by.

I'll say it was somewhat entertaining, but the six-hour presentation (fitting for the 900-page book) was a bit 'too-much'.  I would have told the whole story in 2.5 hours and cut a lot of the chatty science dialog out.

As for the ending?  Like most science fiction pieces....it just left you with more questions.  Swarm II?  No....probably not.

I will applaud ZDF by going into science fiction....but I doubt that you see another SF piece for at least four years.

Second, as we finished the last segment of the Swarm....we went to watch a past weekend episode of Tatort....entitled 'Magic Mom'.

It was probably one of the weirdest 'artsy' crime dramas of the past decade for the series.  It all centered on a woman Tik-Tok 'artist' who is murdered by her husband (you do figure this out in the final 15 minutes).

The two detectives (actually one is a detective and the other is a autopsy guy)....mostly stumble around with Tik Tok-like jokes and it's a heavy critical piece on the people within this 'industry' (I use the word lightly).

I will admit....by the end, it leaves you pondering a number of things about behavior of kids/adults within the Tik Tok community, and if they are now over-acting as part of the new culture around us.

So...if was a TV show about a murder and detectives solving it....while acting in a over-acting mode?  Yeah....that was the weird thing to see in the end.

5-star TV?  No....but if you have a rerun of Shazam or a quiz show offering....there's just not that much there.  Thank God for streaming video.
