Rap music in Germany.....has grown to a significant degree over the past two decades, and one might be surprised at the acceptance in society. If you sit on an early morning bus with forty school kids heading off to their schools in town....there's probably five to eight German kids with headphones on, and listening to some form of rap.
But it's also become this major issue for public to handle, in that various rap lyrics have been critical of the government, laws, provocative sexual views, views on gays and transgenders, and religious groups.
So I noticed it brought up today via N-TV (German commercial news TV) that a significant political players in the state of NRW (Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger) is suggesting self-moderation start to take place in song lyrics.
How this would work? Unknown. Acceptance by the rap community? They probably would make a rap critical of self-moderation or people meddling in free speech.
I should note, this is the same individual who is pressing on for a study (either by the state or federal government) to announce the true problem of Antisemitism written into the lyrics, and how listeners view the suggestive dialog.
The other problem here, which few people grasp....is that rap writers are reviewing society, it's problems, and drifting over to social commentary with rap to demonstrate frustrations with the political spectrum.
