If you brought this up with most Germans, they might be a little surprised/shocked over this. The EU wrote up a regulation (probably on the books for two years already) and it's supposed to start up in 2020. Focus carried the basis of this story.
So here it is...the EU would like to know how you are driving the car of yours....in terms of gas mileage.
This regulation wasn't exactly written in a clear manner, and none of the car companies are sure about how you 'funnel' the data out of the car. Yes, in almost all of the 2019 cars....the vehicle already collect consumption and can provide some type of 'record'. But how would you get that beyond the car....even on a yearly basis?
I sat and pondered over this. The EU obviously had some type of goal, and wanted drivers to know that 'big brother' EU could monitor your consumption level. A tax somewhere down the road? Maybe, but not by the EU (maybe each state or country could rig up their own taxation deal).
A problem for privacy of data? Here's the funny thing. We have various mafia and geeky folks who have a 'black-box' and they can go into your car mileage, and in less than 60 seconds......throw the 88,000 kilometers shown back down to around 55,000 kilometers. A hundred to two-hundred Euro is what the geeky kid asks for the 'act' to be accomplished.
You'd probably approach the same kid.....ask him about the EU regulation, and explain that you want the gas consumption numbers on the car to reflect this fantastic mileage....what you'd expect out of a four-cylinder car that was never driven faster than 25-kilometers per hour. You'd go into the local tax shop to have the download, and the EU would get all this fantastic data.
They'd be amazed that you were getting almost 5,000 km per liter of fuel, and beg to know your secret.
Again, as I've brought up on dozens of occasions.....do you really need the EU that close to your personal life and personal data?
