I often point out how rules and laws can differ....state by state in Germany. There's an item which popped up in the Hessen news this morning....by HR (the regional public TV network).
For the small scooters, you had to be a minimum of 16 years old to procure a license.
Well....as of Friday this week, that will change in Hessen. Fifteen year old kids will be able to get their moped license.
For reference, the moped license is only good for vehicles going up to 45 kph.
The positive spin on this? Well....beyond Frankfurt and Wiesbaden, you tend to find a lot of small villages in Germany with rural situations. So a moped for a 15-year old kid is a super-positive event....where you can actually go five kilometers over to the next village, and hang out there.
I should note this as well...the term often used is 'mofa', which is a small scooter (50 cc or less), or a motorized bike (there were a lot of these in the 1960s/1970s....less so today).
