Berlin Talk

Around a year ago....in Berlin....we had the terror attack (a truck was used) to kill a dozen Germans, and injure a number of others.

There's supposed to be a ceremony of sorts in Berlin with the relatives of those who died, and here in the weeks prior to the meeting....it's apparent now that they are very angry over the government's actions.  This week....a letter was written by the relatives and published in a Berlin news magazine...aimed at Chancellor Merkel.

The chief quote?  "The attack on the Breitscheidplatz is also a tragic consequence of the political inactivity of your federal government."

There's frustrations at various levels.  One suggestion is that they are expecting an apology from the German federal government, which has never occurred.  The odds that Merkel will issue one?  I give it a 50-50 chance at best.

A face-to-face meeting with the relatives and Merkel is supposed to occur on 18 December.  It's a day prior to the Berlin City ceremony.  I have my doubts that this will go well for the Chancellor.

The terrorist involved?  Dead....shot by Italian cops around three weeks after the Berlin attack.  Based on all the reports that came out after the event....this was a guy who was not capable of handling a new lifestyle.  He was into drugs....crime....and could not get a grip on his life.  There are probably several thousand individuals in Germany who fit the same profile, and probably need to be resettled back into their homeland.

The frustrations of these family members?  They can't effectively get any payback from the government and more or less have to accept the situation as it is.
