At the end of yesterday....NATO had a vote and agreed to keep Stoltenberg on as 'boss' until October 2024.
All through the spring of 2023....various names had been put up and discussed as replacements, and no one was satisfied.
This past week...oddly enough....the US (President Biden) suggested EU President Ursula Van der Leyen to the position. Yeah, at that point, I started laughing.
For her, this would have been a step down and I doubt if they really understood current EU politics.
The current term for Van der Leyen? It would run until the spring 2024 EU election, and I would imagine that she will be replaced at that point.
Van der Leyen then progressing over to the NATO position in the fall of 2024? Well....this year in the fall....she turns 65. She'd be 66 if this came up late in 2024.
This sitting well with everyone in the NATO? I'm not that sure. As a Defense Minister for Germany....there's not that much of a resume to show for the job. You would think somewhere in the UK, or France, or Germany....there'd be someone who'd fit better into this job.
