I noticed this crime report on WDR today (that's the public German network for the NW of Germany).
Statistics are in from 2019 year, and what the police say is generally....crime is down.
Overall areas....lowest crime numbers since 1990 for NRW. It's a 4.3 decrease over the previous year.
Home burglaries way down.....another 10-percent cut over the previous year (which saw a 25-percent over 2018).
The one statistic that stands out though, in a negative way.....roughly one-third of all suspects for crimes....did not hold a German passport. Yep....over 150,000 individuals who were suspects....weren't German citizens.
A slam against migrants? Well, the numbers laid out don't really tell the story. You could have clan families from Lebanon, or Serbia, or Russia....who are in the suspects group (not Iraqis, Syrians or Africans). Without that part of the story....it's not complete and one shouldn't rush to some irrational judgement.
But this all brings up the topic....if the numbers fall in the same path for other German states (not just NRW).....why hire the 10,000 extra police (the gimmick from 2018's Bundestag decision)? What exactly are they going to be doing? If the numbers are already retreating to 1990 levels.....that was the chief complaint of most Germans anyway.
