Escalation Story

I sat and looked over this US news story....U.S. European Command (EUCOM) apparently went in the past couple of days and raised its threat levels in Europe to a “potential imminent crisis”.

Reason?  Well....they say some escalation has occurred between the Ukrainian folks and Russia.  More Russian troops along the border?  Well....that's what they suggest.

Where this goes back to?  Around a week ago....four Ukrainian soldiers were shot dead....over on the far east side of the country...north of Donetsk. The precise location is generally left out of coverage (doesn't matter who is reporting on the episode)....which is a bit odd.

What is then said is that shooting from both sides then occurred....lasting a couple of hours, then it just stopped.

The peace agreement deal in Paris of 2019?  Well....it's not worth really talking about.

A lot of this friction goes back to the mid-1600s....as the Cossacks dealt with their northern neighbors.  There's never been true 'love' between the two, and if you add in various Russians who moved into the region over the past hundred years....it's not a unified Ukraine in any sense of the word.  Around five years ago, I was looking at the ethnic make-up of the Ukraine, and it's around 30-odd groups in that mix....which makes it difficult to see a united 'front'.

Who shot the four soldiers?  Factually, you can't get to a clear answer on that.  It might have been Russian soldiers....it might have been pro-Russian civilians seeking trouble....it might have been Russian mafia folks.

As for this escalating to involve NATO or US troops....this starts to get messy if we reach that stage.
