Not That It Really Matters

Focus (the magazine) went out and quizzed CDU Party members (Merkel's group), on how they feel about their party 'chief'....Armin Laschet.

Here's the deal...only one of five members were feeling that he was 'Chancellor-material'.

So, this was strictly party members (around a thousand)....NOT members of the FDP, or SPD, or just plain regular voters.

What you end up with is around three-quarters of the party membership saying that the Premier-President of Bavaria....Soder....is the only guy with the 'edge' to win.

As for the bad polling going on for the party....from this same group of party members....the blame chiefly goes to Covid management/mistakes.

I looked over this and have to remind myself....this is strictly party membership....it's not the general public.

But the piece by Focus ends with this unusual comparison.  When you go back to around 1999....this huge mess occurred with the CDU Party and Chancellor Kohl.  It's often referred to as the 'donation-affair'.

It's one of those things that CDU people over the age of sixty remember in a pretty negative way....it literally destroyed the reputation of Kohl, and knocked the CDU Party down for several years.

The polling from this same group (remember....party members)....suggests that almost half of them put the Covid-19 management business in the same negative prospective right now.

As much as Soder may present some alternate course....the Party mechanism is in some negativity and they've probably done enough to repeat the late 1990s spiral of the Party.  Funny how Merkel was there to help rebuild in 2000, and is here now as dismantling is going on.

Polling matters?  It just says how the membership feels.
