Is There A World Cup Problem Brewing?

Well....here in Germany, the chat started up.

Qatar says 'no' to gay homosexuals showing up and having hotel rooms with other 'guys'.  This has of course....infuriated FIFA.

Now, I could have told you this problem six years ago, but no one seemed to really think about the issue then.

Could you just show up with your buddy....both of you married and straight, and just ask for a 2-bed type room?  Maybe.

But this just begs the next question....what if you showed up with some gal, who was not your wife....just your trampy-gal....would the Qatar folks get bothered by that as well?

It's infuriating to hear that this pernicious prejudice still exists in 2022, but we're talking about a culture that hasn't made much social progress since the Middle Ages. I live in Pennsylvania, a state that has its share of bigots, but there is also a very large progressive population in our state. Several years ago, I brought my daughter to scout some colleges, one of them was Penn State University. While we were being shown around the campus, we heard students in various places--the lunchroom, the student lounge, etc.--chanting "We are Penn State." At first, I thought that this was just an example of good old-school pride. But it's more than that. Before a football game between Alabama and Penn State, the coach of Alabama requested that the coach of Penn State keep the black players on the bench. This was in the "bad ole days" in the south, before the civil rights bill was passed, making separation by race illegal (though the South never got on board completely with this law). Well, the coach of Penn State considered the request from the coach of Alabama and said, "We don't do that here. We are Penn State."

I'll just say that this should have been cleared up when they were 'awarded' the World Cup. To have this come up now? Kinda sets a bad deal.

However, lets be honest.....a fair number of folks are not interested in attending the World Cup games in late November to mid December (I'd be the last person on the list, even if I had $10k to throw around for a trip). I just can't get charged up on soccer....around the holiday season.
