1. You are obliged if stopped by the police.....to provide car registration and your license (if asked).
2. If asked where you are going or where you came from (by the police).....you can remain silent. Don't offer a fake story, to get yourself deeper into trouble.
3. If the police ask to search your car....without a warrant, you don't have to allow them into the car or into your bags. However, if they ask for the warning tringle or first aid kit....you have to allow them access to see these (and examine).
4. Be absolute brief and respectful of the police. Don't wander into a 8-minute explanation of something.
5. If asked by the police IF you know why you were stopped....always answer 'no, why'. If you say yes, then it's possible for them to run a criminal charge that you knowingly violated the law. In this case....act stupid but respectful. Once the police state the violation....simply say 'oh' and little else.

I always play the "stupid American" card. Works every time. lol
Five times in 20-odd years...pulled over by the German cops. None related to speeding...always a alcohol, papers, taxable stuff check.
So yes, always play the stupid-American act...but being respectful of the badge. I think the majority of German cops (especially in the 1980s) figured almost all Americans never got past the 8th grade of school, and they were all 'dim-witted'. As long as you aren't drunk, disrespectful, or hauling cannabis around...they'd prefer not to mess with some stupid-American.
