Since the mid-1980s, I've had this fascination with cults. Not that I would really want to join up with one.....just that they seem to have no trouble in recruitment, and people seem easily drawn to them.
In today's world, I think a fair number of people within cults....don't really grasp it until they've gotten to the deepest levels.
So my five bits of advice on how to recognize your 'attachment':
1. If you've hooked up with a group that absolutely forbids skepticism of any type....the odds are, they are a cult.
2. If a friend within the group has walked away from the group, and the group has prioritized condemnation of the former member....to the level that you shouldn't speak or contact them....it's a cult.
3. If your group thrives/grows off catastrophic ideals or they are into the 'saving' business....it's a cult.
4. If your group puts up roadblocks to rational thinking or instructs you continually to a one-truth gimmick....it's a cult.
5. If your group portrays itself as a 'Avengers' type organization.....fighting the great evil that exists....it's a cult.
Oddly enough, viewing the mid-1980s to today....I would suggest more cults exist today, than forty years ago. Even across Europe today....there's a thriving cult world in existence.
