7 Jan 2024: Five German News Stories

 1.  Some analytical chatter on Focus this AM....discussing the three eastern Germany state elections for 2024 (it's really four if you count the re-do in Berlin in Feb).

If you do review the polls....presently, the AfD is likely to win all three state  elections, but forming a coalition is next to impossible.

I would add a footnote....the BWS Party and the VerteUnion Party (both new)....have almost  no polling done.  In all three states, I suspect that the BWS Party and VerteUnion Party will eat heavily into AfD's numbers.  In my scenario, I suspect AfD will come in around 3rd place in the 3 state elections, and BWS/VerteUnion will demonstrate themselves as a new factor.

2.  Some chatter starting up from German police....that extremists will likely try to infiltrate the farmer-protest movement.  Fake farmers?  Well....that's the suggestion.

The suggestion mostly leads back to AfD strategy people.  I would also imagine that the 'Last Generation' folks might figure into this as well.

3.  Legal mess brewing....city of Göttingen (about 30 min driving north of Kassel).  Back in the Covid era....city officials had some idea of a outbreak in a major apartment building in the city (housing 700 folks).

City authorities authorized a security fence to keep people in/out (this was summer of 2020).  Apparently, they didn't have any authority to limit entry or exiting....particularly if you didn't have Covid.  Has to be some kind of damages  assessed here....massive legal mess.

I can't recall any other city in Germany going to this extreme.

4.  Between Duisburg and Essen (far northwest)....refugee event occurred.

From what the police report....they were called to a 'reception center' for refugees in Mülheim an der Ruhr.

They arrive and are told that a 26-year-old Guinean is in some heated argument and some type of threat was being conveyed.  Somewhere in the process (before arrival) the Guinean is striking the center security staff (this is before the police get the call).

Police arrive, and the guy has gone back to his room.....cops want to interview the guy and get some idea over the event.  Argument starts up.

Cops go to the next step....bringing their taser out.  End up applying the charge twice. What the police say....the taser had marginal effect.  There's some kind of scuffle that then occurs....appears two police were bit by the migrant, and another officer kicked  in the head.

When they finally got him tied down (onto a ambulance gurney)....the guy had some kind of reaction....losing consciousness.  Resuscitation failed....died at the hospital.

Police will have to explain some things (why the taser failed, if the guy was on drugs, if the guy had a weak heart, etc).  Oddly, no one says what the original argument with the staff security folks....was about.

4.  Block scandal development? Well....Danish authorities have the two kids in question, and have decided the current atmosphere between Mr Block and his ex-wife....are pretty crappy....so the kids are being held by the authorities.

If you were looking for a good movie script  idea....this would be a five-star script.

5.  German natural gas use higher than in the previous year?  Yeah....numbers say around 6-percent higher usage.  They aren't freaking out (there is a limited amount of natural gas because of the ban on Russian natural gas).

Folks getting a rougher January shortly?  I looked over the weather pattern for the next two weeks in central German....lot of freezing temperatures, with snow predicted in the central region by Friday of the upcoming week.
