Syrian Chatter

Back in 2015, Chancellor Angela Merkel went onto the Sunday night public forum show....the Anne Will Show....to say that 70-percent of Syrians in Germany....want to return to their homeland as soon as the war is over.

A fair number of Germans remember this, and occasionally it comes up....in a negative way.

Around  this time.....2015/2016....I was taking German language classes...with most classes filled with 30-to-50 percent Syrians.

It came to be a interesting topic in the class...with the majority of Syrians over the age of forty....absolutely set on leaving Germany and returning home (probably 90-percent of them).   But the crowd under age 30? Well....it was probably 90-percent set staying.

Logic to this?   No matter how you sold living Damascus....Wiesbaden won out on safety, transportation, job-potential, and living standards.

My gut feeling at the time? The civil conflict would likely continue, and you'd be looking at five to ten years before it ended.   The longer it took....the more likely they'd stay.

Merkel wasn't wrong.....she probably saw the war ending in a year or two.  She simply judged all Syrians feeling home-sick and wanting to return.

Why would anyone want to go back? There is plenty of free stuff here.

My belief...of all the various refugee societies.....Syrians were the more educated (with a skill that they could market in Germany). If you were 20 to 30 years old as a Syrian....the German entry deal was a 5-star option. Most who've been here since 2014....got integrated....got the language....got jobs, and got off welfare-help. You don't see the gov't talking numbers, but the impression is that the vast number of Syrians are not drawing gov't welfare. Oddly, the gov't will admit that EU citizens are here in Germany and drawing welfare (doesn't make a lot of sense). Eventually, some party will ask the question of 'who' is drawing what, and then list conditions to advance or leave. And no, I don't think it'll be the AfD Party.

Pointing out....around 20-percent of Germans age 18-to-30....have either NO job certification or marginal training....so advancing is a problem. This group is prime to expect 'free-stuff' in the decades to come. Come 2040....I'm wondering how 'free-stuff' funding will work.

Have you covered this? Update on Germany's Military Reform🇩🇪🛡️
Last Friday, Germany’s Wehrdienstreform (military service reform) was approved, marking a significant step in our country’s defense evolution. This reform is a big shift toward responsible defense and a stronger role in NATO.
Key points:
📝Mandatory Registration: Starting in 2026, all 18-year-olds will register for military service—men must, women can choose.
🪖More Soldiers: Germany aims to increase its military to 255,000-270,000 active soldiers by 2035, along with 200,000 reservists.
💶Incentives: Voluntary service will be encouraged with salaries of €2,600/month and other benefits.
What’s Next?
✍️The law will be signed by Germany’s President and is set to take effect on January 1, 2026.
⏳If recruitment numbers don’t meet the goal by 2027, Germany could be required to introduce a mandatory draft, ensuring the country meets its defense needs.
While the U.S. remains NATO’s backbone, this reform shows Germany’s growing commitment to collective defense and regional security. 🇺🇸🤝🇩🇪

I've covered the 'reforms'....piece by piece...going back to spring 2025. The reservists-add-on is a copy of what Finland did. However, based on commentary of 17/18 years olds in public....it's probably only 50-to-60 percent who might sign up. If the 'volunteer-game' fails...draft would occur (probably in 2027)....but I have doubts that the Court will allow them to do it, and that most teens would still refuse to participate.

Funny topic to bring up....probably two-thirds of Germany society now fear war with Russia (thanks to public forum chatter and news coverage). Germans woke up 3 years ago to realize that they don't have enough bunkers, or enough tanks, or enough ammo.
