3 Jan 2024: Seven German News Stories

 1.  Starting yesterday....voting information for the 11 Feb 're-vote' in Berlin (because of the crappy way that the 2021 federal election was held in the city)....was mailed out.  Anyone's guess how many folks will show up for this attempt to rectify the screw-up's of 2021.

2.  For the 21-million German pension folks....a 3.5-percent rise in pay will occur in 2024.

3.  Mini-Job (tax-free) status in 2024 will go to a limit of 538 Euro a month (max of 11 hours of work a week, or 47 hours in a month).

4.  Starting in mid-July 2024, a EDR (Event Data Recorder) has to be in every single new car sold (works like a black box on aircraft).

In the event of an accident....pretty good odds that the police will demand access to it and download the data to prove you are at fault.  Another item that the EU mandated.

5.  Chatter starting up over a ban of the AfD Party (somehow, the coalition government would find legal means to just ban them).  Presently, if you view national polls....AfD is around 20-percent of the public trend.

Some people believe that if you banned them....the votes would merely go to the newly organized BWS-Party.   In their mind, it wouldn't resolve much of anything.

6.  Interesting statistic....for 2023....45.9-million residents of Germany are employed (most ever).   Yet job offers are still out there for more folks.  You can ride the city bus system and see advertisements for more drivers. Just walking through the city....job offers are pasted on stores.  My local grocery bulletin-board had a listing last Saturday for a Doctor's helper.

7.  Curious reporting.  For the entire past month as the Claudia Gay episode went on within Harvard (she was their university president/chancellor)....over plagiarism in her thesis, hardly a word was mentioned in German press (public or commercial).

Then as she resigned yesterday...massive amount of sudden reporting.  Almost all cite shortest term ever for a Harvard president/chancellor.
