5 Jan 2024: Eight German News Stories

 1.  Tegut, the German grocery, has a concept store....unmanned.  It's about the size of a house-trailer.  You slide your credit card through....get access to enter (round-the-clock) and charge at the end as you exit.

Yeah, it's mostly an experiment, for smaller villages.  A truck will come in once a day....restocking the place.

So, the city of Fulda said 'NO'.....you can't run such an operation on Sundays/holidays....taking Tegut to court.  Court rendered a verdict yesterday....Hessen State Court said 'no'.....the law would have to be amended if you wanted open situations on holidays or Sundays....even if no human runs the operation.

Kinda funny....I think.

2.  For those who used to be stationed around Frankfurt and remember the old police HQ's near the train-station (massive building)....it's been shut-down for years and on a massive re-use plan for the property.

Well....it's come out that the developer who had the plan and permission to proceed....is bankrupt.

Moving on?  Probably won't happen in 2024 or 2025, until they sort out who now owns the rights to the property or is assigned rights by the court.

Massive property and would have been a major deal in projects.

3.  Ice and snow projected for early next week.  Past month?  Most moderate temperatures I've seen in thirty years.  But probably double the amount of rain.

4.  How many strike formations are on the German landscape?  Three presently....farmers, railway folks, and doctors.

5.  Lot more chatter coming out of the confrontation at the ferry in Schlesweg-Holstein, with Habeck (Economics Minister) onboard.  Police had to use pepper spray and force to keep the hundred-odd farmers away.

After watching the video....I' say yeah....things got hectic and the number of cops were adequate in protecting the guy.  Just a lot of negativity brewing in the farming community over the loss of the subsidy.

6.  Some rumor started (BS possibly) that Russia has gone into the territory of Ukraine they control, and are actively recruiting/forcing 17-year old locals into the Russian military.

7.  City of Wiesbaden and Mainz gave a warning yesterday....serious farmer blockades for Monday.  One main drag of Wiesbaden (Mainzer Strasse) to be blocked.  In Mainz, three surrounding autobahns will be blocked in some fashion.  City suggesting if you don't have a big reason to be in town....don't make plans for morning travel.

Across Germany, I expect this trend to continue for next couple of weeks.  Some police chatter that the AfD Party is politicizing the farmer blockade.

Economically, inflation has challenged  German society.

8.  Frau Block-scandal business continues.  Kids have been returned to the ex-husband in Denmark.  From what I've read....two kids....10/13.  Custody battle that got way out of control, with kidnapping.
