Yes.
If you were indexing them on a spectrum....they would be absolutely right-of-center (further right than the CDU, and slightly right of the Bavarian CSU). But probably not as right as the AfD Party.
What they anticipate? Well....in their mind, from this AfD voter group (currently figured around 21-percent of the voting public).....they might be able to take half of these voters with a more balanced list of priorities, and be a more conservative than the current CDU Party.
Odds that they would take some CDU and CSU votes? No polls have been done and its strictly speculation about that idea.
The guy running the effort? This gets interesting.
Presently a CDU politician, but on the verge being expelled. Hans-Georg Maaßen, had been the President of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution (Germany's version of the FBI). Back around six years ago, under Merkel.....he'd been directed to investigate the AfD Party, and he quickly responded that they'd been viewing the AfD folks, and presently....nothing illegal was going on.
This response got the opposition folks all disturbed because they wanted charges or a shut-down of the AfD Party. Over a week or two....Merkel finally called him in, and fired him. In her mind, at least the general public believes that....she wanted him to crank up a fake investigation....spend weeks or months on the gimmick, and then crank down the whole thing. He wasn't willing to compromise....pretending there was an investigation when there was nothing illegal going on.
So Maaßen has been simmering ever since. Screwed over by the firing, and the CDU Party all hyped up to expel him presently.
The CDU screwed up? They accidentally created a mini-Frankenstein....to which....he'll run around and say things that a quarter of CDU or CSU voters agree to.
I wouldn't be that shocked in 2025....as things heat up for the national election in the fall....if you see the VerteUnion standing there with 10 percent of the vote, and half of that coming directly out of the AfD voters, and the other half from the CDU and CSU voters.
Even if the CDU were to win.....how do you then approach the coalition problem of 50-percent control of the Bundestag? Will they go to the VerteUnion and open talks to be a member of the coalition? I doubt it.
