After the 8 PM news ended last night on ARD (public TV, Channel One)....they went to a live interview with Chancellor Merkel on the Covid-19 business.
Number of occasions that the Chancellor agrees to do these types of interviews....prime-time-wise? Over the past five years, I'd take a guess that there's no more than three of these.
Level of aggressiveness by the two moderators? Well....on a scale of one to ten (ten being extremely harsh)....the two moderators barely bumped '4' or '5' on aggressive questions.
The Chancellor's crew probably felt a fair amount of criticism over the past two weeks (some richly deserved)....that the public is questioning the EU, the delivery schedule of the vaccine, the ban rules increasing, and just general frustrations.
If you tried to grade Chancellor Merkel on crisis management....her plus-side is that she arranges the seats of the ministries to fairly competent people and lets them run their own operation. You can gaze over at the Health Ministry and generally say that Spahn has been a five-star manager. Spahn's problems are that he can't work miracles with the vaccine production business, and he can't run state-by-state health programs because his line of authority ends at the state borders.
In terms of the negative-side of her crisis management situation....she's not capable of directing the sixteen state Premier-Presidents, and they've pretty much limited her actions and path ahead.
How many Germans watched the live interview? Unknown. Generally, at 8:15 PM....Germans flip the channel after the news, and find entertainment.
The two chief things you could have gotten out of the interview? The Chancellor anticipates that the bulk of people (the herd) will get the vaccination by the end of June. Then she hinted that other vaccines are being pursued for approval (like the Russian vaccine).
So that was it....somewhat reassuring, and no harsh criticism over the agenda.
