Focus carried this story in the AM today and it's about the EU 'lateness' problem in getting the vaccine business done.
So back in mid-to-late summer, the German Health Minister (Spahn) called up the Chancellor. In some friendly but blunt way....he told Merkel that the EU Health Minister wasn't that competent on the contract business, and she didn't have capability to deal with vaccine companies.
At this point, Leyen was contracted by Merkel. They had this friendly chat. No one says what happened after this, but the contract business didn't get fixed up with the EU at late August.
The EU Health Minister tried to get Spahn into the process. He called Merkel...again stating the obvious.
So the deal with this Minister from the EU (Kriakides)? She appears to have gotten the job based on contacts, and not qualifications.
If you were a Brit....you'd laugh over this, but Spahn obviously saw the whole landscape and other than him doing the right thing for Germany....the whole EU episode was crapped out because they didn't hire the right person.
Resolving or fixing this? I'm guessing this individual is just one of a hundred people in the EU, who got the job because of connections and not their capabilities.
