If around Germans, and attempting to use the phrase Wuhan-virus or China-virus....you will get a 'yellow-card' (the term in soccer for a warning).
However, the phrase British-mutant-virus? Well....yeah, that's perfectly Ok.
I sat and watched this commentary over the past week....with the term 'British-virus' or 'British-mutant-virus' uttered at least forty times during the week. That's all acceptable and perfectly agreeable.
Just an odd thing that you tend to notice.
Somewhere along the lines, the virus experts should have come out and made a judgement call...calling the mutant bug 'Covid-19-A'.

Well, it's probably gluten-free bat soup.
I would add this comment...if someone came up in Germany with some type of venison stew, that had a serious bacteria problem and was being passed around deer-to-deer....killing 10k Germans a year, virtually everyone would halt venison stew overnight and it'd be totally forbidden as a dish. That's the difference between the German society and the Chinese society.
