On New Year's Eve in Germany....people typically go out and drink a bit....fire off fireworks, and then quietly by 2 AM....return home.
In the news this morning, out of Koln, Focus (the German news magazine) reports that the cops got called out to some high-rise building.
What the cops say is that this had turned into a mass brawl, with fifty people fighting. A show of force with the cops became necessary, with riot gear and pepper spray. In the end, they carried away three folks for charges, and some ambulance crew had to attend to a number of folks with pepper spray issues.
What was the fight over? Unknown. It might have been the alcohol, or just some stupid insult made....but things got way out of control. Cops end up at something like this and just shake their heads.
