The Grid Story

There's a great piece in ARD (the public TV network, Channel One) today, which talks about the electrical grid in Germany.

In 2018, we finally passed the 40-percent point with solar/wind energy generated and flowing through the grid.  The plus-side from solar?  Well, we had a very productive year, with a great deal of sunshine.  Some will argue about the drought, but this was a positive from the weather pattern.

A decade ago, this renewable piece of the grid only amounted to around 16-percent of the grid.

Does this end or really lessen dependency on coal/nuke power?  No.  The fact that you can't always depend on wind, or cloudless days....means you have to have reserve power sitting there and ready to go.  Lessening the cost to the consumer?  No, nowhere in this scheme does a cost relief situation come to benefit the German consumer.  You can ask folks, and most everyone will tell you that they pay anywhere from one-quarter to one-half more, than they paid a decade ago.
